“Social casino” describes the style of play; “sweepstakes casino” usually describes a promotional model layered around that style of play. The two can look similar on screen, but the rules around currencies, entries and prizes may be very different.
Social casino
Casino-style entertainment played primarily with virtual currency. The focus is social or recreational play rather than conventional real-money wagering.
Sweepstakes casino
A platform that commonly combines social casino-style games with promotional sweepstakes mechanics governed by specific official rules.
The practical differences
| Question | Social casino | Sweepstakes casino |
|---|---|---|
| Casino-style games? | Usually | Usually |
| Virtual currency? | Common | Common, sometimes more than one type |
| Promotional sweepstakes layer? | Not necessarily | Commonly central to the model |
| Prize/redemption mechanics? | Often not part of ordinary social play | May exist under specific rules and eligibility conditions |
| Rules matter? | Yes | Especially — currencies and promotional mechanics vary |
Why the names can be confusing
Two websites can look very similar and still operate under different rules. Marketing language also differs between brands. That is why the best way to understand a platform is to ignore the category label for a moment and read what its currencies, entries and prizes actually do.
Is either one the same as a traditional online casino?
Not automatically. A traditional online casino generally involves real-money wagering under the gambling rules and licensing regime that apply where it operates. Social and sweepstakes models can use different legal and promotional structures.
Where will Sizzle Spins fit?
Sizzle Spins is still pre-launch. We will describe the final model in plain English once the product structure is fixed. We will not rely on a category label as a substitute for explaining how the actual experience works.
